In the aftermath of the deadly attack on a Moscow concert hall, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stirred international controversy by implicating both “radical Islamists” and Ukraine in the atrocity.

While acknowledging the involvement of “radical Islamists,” Putin reiterated his assertion of a potential Ukrainian link to the attackers, a claim vehemently tagged by Ukrainian officials as “absurd“.

The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for the massacre, releasing chilling footage of the assault that left 139 dead and numerous others injured, including children. Amidst ongoing investigations, Putin has emphasized the need to uncover those behind the attack, raising questions about possible connections and motives.

In a televised address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Putin’s accusations, labeling him as “sick and cynical” for attempting to blame Ukraine once again.

The United States has squarely placed the blame on IS, dismissing any alleged Ukrainian involvement, while European nations heighten security measures in response to the heightened jihadist threat.

Legal proceedings have commenced against suspects linked to the massacre, with individuals from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan facing charges related to terrorism. The attack comes on the heels of warnings issued by the US embassy regarding potential extremist activities, which Putin previously dismissed as provocative.

Amidst escalating tensions, Russia’s FSB security service reported thwarting an attempted attack by pro-Ukraine Russian fighters in Samara, underscoring the volatile climate prevailing in the region. Despite international condemnation of Putin’s rhetoric, concerns persist over the resurgence of jihadist plots, particularly in Western Europe, with major sporting events looming on the horizon.

France, on high alert since the attack, has bolstered security measures, with Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin revealing that multiple attacks have been foiled in recent months. As preparations for the Olympic Games in Paris intensify, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced the deployment of additional troops to counter potential threats.
