FG to support Kwara Govt dry season farming programme

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), Dr Aliyu Abdullahi, has assured of his Ministry’s support in implementing the Kwara State Government’s all-year-round farming programme, giving it a significant boost.

In a statement, Oladipo Olushola, Assistant Press Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, conveyed that Dr Abdullahi provided this assurance during his working visit to all federal agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Ilorin on Friday.

During the visit, the Minister, emphasised the federal government’s commitment to nationwide dry season farming, aimed at achieving self-reliance in food production.

Dr Abdullahi urged all federal agencies under the Ministry to collaborate with the Kwara State Government for the successful implementation of the programme in the state.

He highlighted the importance of the four major commodities—rice, wheat, maize, and cassava—as essential food sources for both humans and animals.

The Minister, acknowledging small-scale farmers as the backbone of the country’s agricultural sector, encouraged the state to join forces with the federal government in providing necessary support and creating an enabling environment for the farming business to thrive.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Oloruntoyosi Thomas described the Minister’s visit as timely and a catalyst to expedite the realization of the state government’s agricultural policy thrust outlined in the Agricultural Master Plan.

During the visit, she also took the opportunity to discuss potential areas of collaboration with the Minister and heads of federal agencies in the state.
