The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken into custody the popular cross-dresser Bobrisky, also identified as Idris Okuneye, for his involvement in currency mutilation and the improper handling of naira notes.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that the Best Dressed Female awardee was apprehended in Lagos on Wednesday night.
“He was arrested Wednesday night in Lagos,” confirmed the official from the anti-graft agency. “He has been detained at our Lagos Office and will face charges in court.”
Adding that “he will soon be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.”
“Cross-dressing as an Offense”
In the midst of the ensuing social backlash calling for the arrest of Bobrisky for allegedly exhibiting unlawful gender behavior, the Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi asserted that until there’s legal basis for the arrest of cross-dressers in Nigeria, there was nothing the police could do.

“I have not come across any law that deems cross-dressing as an offense in Nigeria,” he stated during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on April 2.
“Let us be reasonable, you cannot arrest somebody you want to prosecute without having credible evidence and as such, crossdressing is not yet a crime in Nigeria.

“Some of them that are into cross-dressing, the allegation is that they are into something else, that’s where the problem lies. We need enough proof that they are actually into ‘that’. All those offences are natural in Nigeria and punishable under our laws,” he added.
Bobrisky, for couple of months, has been the subject of various controversies, notably his receipt of the “Best Dressed Female” Award at a movie premiere held on March 25. The event had sparked significant criticism from numerous entertainers, especially the activist, named by his social media handles as VeryDarkMan, who found dismay in his personality.
