Dangote Petroleum Refinery has successfully initiated the production of diesel and aviation fuel, marking a significant stride in the much-anticipated project.
Despite not yet producing Petroleum Motor Spirit (petrol), the refinery’s Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, officially confirmed the commencement of operations on Friday. A statement released by the Dangote Group on Saturday clarified that the facility has begun the production of diesel and aviation fuel.
Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, expressed his elation and gratitude, particularly acknowledging the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement, Dangote conveyed his thanks to various entities, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, and the Nigerian people for their unwavering support.
“We thank President Bola Tinubu for his support and for making our dream come true. This is a big day for Nigeria. We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone. This is an important achievement for our country as it demonstrates our ability to develop and deliver large capital projects. This is a game changer for our country,” Dangote stated.
The Dangote Refinery, located in the Dangote Industries Free Zone, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, boasts a capacity to refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The facility, covering approximately 2,635 hectares, has received six shipments of one million barrels each of crude oil to date.
The refinery’s ability to load 2,900 trucks a day at its truck-loading gantries is a testament to its operational efficiency. Notably, the produced products adhere to Euro V specifications, with the refinery’s design aligning with international emission norms.

While the production of petrol has been temporarily delayed due to the gradual supply of crude oil, the Dangote Refinery’s foray into diesel and aviation fuel production is seen as a positive step towards addressing the nation’s energy needs.
Nigerians are optimistic that the refinery’s operations will eventually lead to a reduction in the price of petroleum products, bringing relief to consumers nationwide.
