Nigeria’s representation at the prestigious BRIT Awards falls short once again as Burna Boy, Asake, and Rema fail to secure any accolades at the latest edition held in London’s 02 Arena.
Burna Boy and Asake, two prominent figures in Nigeria’s music scene, were nominated in the highly contested category of Best International Act of the Year. However, their hopes were dashed as the award went to American sensation, SZA.
Similarly, Rema, known for his chart-topping hits, faced disappointment as his track ‘Calm Down‘ lost out in the category of Best International Song of the Year to Miley Cyrus’ Flowers.
Despite the setback, Rema captivated the audience with a spellbinding performance of his song ‘Calm Down,’ marking a momentous occasion as only the second African artist to grace the BRITs stage, following in the footsteps of Burna Boy, who performed at the ceremony in 2019.
Meanwhile, British singer Raye made history by clinching an unprecedented six awards in a single year at the BRITs. Her triumph included coveted titles such as Best New Artist, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Best R&B Act, and Songwriter of the Year.

Nigerian prodigy, Divine Ikubor, famously known as Rema, was confirmed as a performer at the prestigious BRIT Awards 2024 a few weeks ago.
The revelation was made via the event organizer’s official social media platforms on.
“Stay calm, @heisrema will be performing at the #BRITs 2024.
“let’s gooooooo,” Brit Awards wrote via X.
Rema has joined the rank of Burna Boy who was the first Nigerian artiste to perform at the Brit Awards in 2018.
The BRIT Awards are the British Phonographic Industry’s popular music awards, representing an annual celebration of outstanding achievements in the music industry.
The name was originally a shortened form of “British”, “Britain”, or “Britannia,” largely because in the early days of the awards, they were sponsored by Britannia Music Club. It subsequently became a backronym for British Record Industry Trusts Show.
Recall that GOLDEN PAGE MAGAZINE had earlier reported that the three prominent Afrobeats artists, Burna Boy, Asake, and Rema earned nominations for the prestigious 2024 BRIT Awards.
Burna Boy and Asake were nominated in the fiercely competitive International Artiste of the Year category, alongside global icons such as Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus.
Rema’s chart-topping single, ‘Calm Down,’ secured a nomination in the coveted International Song of the Year category, where it contended with global hits like Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For’ and Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘vampire.’
A noteworthy change this year is the expansion of the nominee list for both Artiste of the Year and International Artiste of the Year from five to ten, a strategic move by the BRIT Awards to enhance representation and inclusion.
Additionally, the introduction of new genre awards, including R&B Act, Alternative/Rock Acts, Dance Acts, Pop Acts, and Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act, underscores the diverse musical landscapes in the UK.
Breaking records this year is British singer, Rachel Agatha Keen, known as RAYE, who secured the most nominations in a single year, surpassing the previous record held jointly by Gorillaz, Craig David, and Robbie Williams.
This reflects a dynamic and evolving music scene, with artists pushing creative boundaries.
The introduction of genre-specific awards and the expansion of nominee lists demonstrate the BRIT Awards’ commitment to recognizing the versatility, creativity, and diverse styles within the music industry.
Nigeria is still yet to have a Brit Award winner.
