Today March 2, the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, announced this on his official social media handles, saying:
“Sad Day for Actors Guild of Nigeria. Kate Henshaw lost her mother earlier today, and Mr Ibu suffered cardiac arrest, according to his manager for 24 years, Mr Don Single Nwuzor.
“I announce with a deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it. Make his soul rest in peace.”
A sad farewell has been bidden to a man whose comedic genius and unparalleled talent left an indelible mark on Nollywood and the hearts of fans worldwide.
Early Life and Struggles
Born on October 17, 1961, in Nkanu West L.G.A., Enugu State, Mr. Ibu’s journey was one of resilience and perseverance. Following the death of his father in 1974, Okafor moved to Sapele to live with his brother. Here, he undertook various menial jobs to finance his education and support his family.
His early forays into the workforce included stints as a hairstylist, a photographer, and a company worker involved in crate production. Despite his dreams being temporarily dashed due to financial constraints, which led him to drop out of the College of Education, Yola, his determination saw him eventually enrolling in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu.
A Storied Career in Nollywood
Mr. Ibu’s career in the Nigerian film industry is nothing short of legendary. With over 200 films to his name, including hits like “Mr. Ibu” (2004), “Mr. Ibu in London” (2005), and “Ibu in Prison” (2006), he brought laughter and joy to millions. His unique brand of comedy, often infused with a poignant humanity, made him a household name not just in Nigeria but across Africa and beyond.
Musical Ventures
Not content with conquering the silver screen alone, Mr. Ibu also dabbled in music. In 2020, he released singles “This Girl” and “Do You Know,” showcasing his versatility and creative spirit. Though his musical career was brief compared to his acting, it further cemented his status as a multifaceted entertainer.
Health Challenges and Final Days
The latter part of Mr. Ibu’s life was marked by significant health challenges. In October 2023, he shared with the public his battle with an ailment that eventually led to the amputation of his leg. Despite the severity of his condition, he remained a figure of strength and resilience.
