The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi has knocked the Federal Government over a plan to spend N15 billion to construct a new residence for the Vice President Kashim Shetima.
Obi who described the action as insensitive to the present economic realities facing the country, queried the rationale behind it.
Minister of the Federal Capital Terrority, FCT, Nyesom Wike, confirmed that 15 billion Naira will be spent on the construction of a new residence for the Vice President.
Wike at the budget defence before the House of Representative Committee on the 61.5 billion 2023 supplementary Budget said the construction of the Vice President’s residence was approved in 2010 by the Federal Executive Council, FEC at the cost of N7 billion, but the project was abandoned.
He further disclosed that the present administration decided to revisit the project and it was revalued at N15 billion.
” The initial sum of N5 billion has been earmarked in the FCT supplementary budget 2023 to get the project underway.” he disclosed.
Obi while reacting to the matter on his official X handle on Monday said the plans to spend such an amount on the Vice President’s residence is disheartening.
The former Anambra State Governor disclosed that the budget for the housing of the Vice President is about the annual salary of about 3000 professors in the Nigerian universities as well as a good loan to cater for students in Nigeria.

He lamented the disparity between the living conditions of Nigerians and the lifestyle of the leaders.
He, therefore urged those presently at the helm of affairs in Nigeria to ensure sacrificial leadership and stop demonstrating insensitivity to the plight of the people.
