President Bola Tinubu has urged herders across the country to halt open grazing, surrender all illegal weapons, and fully transition to ranching as part of a nationwide strategy to address the persistent farmer–herder crisis.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasized that the Federal Government is now prioritising long-term solutions to the years-long clashes between herding and farming communities—conflicts that have driven instability across several northern and central states.
The President’s directive comes amid a renewed wave of school kidnappings in states such as Niger and Kebbi, as well as ongoing farmer–herder confrontations in North Central Nigeria, where dozens have been killed in recent months.
“Ranching is now the path forward for sustainable livestock farming and national harmony,” Tinubu declared.
He urged all herder associations to embrace this shift, end open grazing, and willingly surrender illegal arms currently in circulation.
Tinubu also called on mosques and churches, particularly those in high-risk areas, to collaborate closely with security agencies for better protection during worship and gatherings.
Highlighting the recently established Ministry of Livestock as a central pillar of his administration’s long-term plan, the President encouraged herders to partner with the ministry to modernise livestock production through ranch-based practices.
He noted that farmer–herder conflicts have long fueled insecurity—from land disputes to deadly confrontations—especially in the Middle Belt.
The new livestock policy, he added, aims to protect both farmers and herders while reducing land-use tensions across the country.
To support the transition, Tinubu said the Federal Government, working with state governments, will develop frameworks for establishing ranches and enforce measures to curb the circulation of illegal weapons.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has heightened security across the state following threats from a self-proclaimed bandit in the Edo Central Senatorial District.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Fred Itua, residents were assured of maximum protection.
The governor also held an emergency security meeting after a viral video surfaced showing an alleged bandit threatening communities around Ekpoma and nearby areas.
Recently, the Edo State Special Security Squad apprehended two suspected kidnappers—Anthony Fedigha Ebimienwei and Luke Disemoh—in the Egbai Community of Ovia North-East LGA after extensive intelligence-driven operations.
The state government urged citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading false information, and work with security agencies. Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding residents, travellers, and investors.
