The High Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has granted bail to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, in the sum of N50 million.
The ruling, delivered by Judge Rahmon Oshodi, also requires Emefiele to provide two sureties of similar financial standing.
Emefiele faces a 26-count charge related to alleged abuse of office, a matter that has garnered considerable attention. Initially, he pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Following his arraignment earlier in the week at the Lagos State Special Offences Court, he was remanded in EFCC custody pending further legal proceedings.
However, today’s ruling marks a turning point as Emefiele’s bail application found favor with the court. His co-defendant, Herry Omoile, was not as fortunate and has been remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services.
Prior to the court’s decision, Emefiele’s legal counsel, Abdulakeem Ladi-Lawal, urged the court to consider granting bail, suggesting self-recognition or lenient terms.
Ladi-Lawal emphasized the importance of fairness and referenced similar bail conditions granted by another court.

While the EFCC did not oppose the bail application, its lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) stressed the necessity for conditions ensuring the defendants’ presence at trial.
The charges against Emefiele and his associates include accepting gratification, receiving gifts through intermediaries, corruption, and fraudulent property transactions.
The case has drawn attention not only for its implications on Emefiele’s reputation but also for its broader significance in combating corruption within the Nigerian financial sector.
As legal proceedings continue, all eyes remain on the unfolding developments surrounding this high-profile case.
