Following the trial of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by EFCC, Godwin Emefiele, and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, the Ikeja High Court has ordered their remand in custody.

Emefiele was remanded to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), while Omoile was remanded to Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

This development was communicated through an announcement by the EFCC’s social media platform after the court session held in Lagos State on Monday.

The charges against Emefiele and Omoile relate to their alleged involvement in a fraud amounting to $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.

Presiding Judge Rahman Oshodi has set the next court date for Thursday, April 11, for a bail hearing.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them by the EFCC during the proceedings.

Rotimi Oyedepo, representing the EFCC, urged the court to expedite the trial process, emphasizing the need to present witnesses to substantiate their case.

AbdulHakeem Labi-Lawal, the defense counsel, sought bail for his clients, proposing “self-recognition” or bail under “the most liberal terms” until the next hearing. However, the court upheld its decision to keep Emefiele and Omoile in custody as per the court’s orders.

Despite the defense’s plea, the EFCC legal team, led by Oyedepo, did not contest the bail request, emphasizing the court’s discretion in such matters.
