Pig Kidney Transplant Patient Leaves Hospital

After becoming the first recipient of a genetically modified pig kidney, a 62-year-old man has been discharged from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

Richard “Rick” Slayman, hailing from Weymouth, Massachusetts, left the hospital on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in medical history.

Slayman had been battling end-stage kidney disease, necessitating an urgent organ transplant. His doctors at MGH conducted a groundbreaking surgery on March 16th, transplanting a genetically-edited pig kidney into his body.

The four-hour-long procedure proved to be successful, with Slayman’s new pig kidney functioning well, eliminating the need for dialysis.

Expressing his joy, Slayman stated, “Being able to leave the hospital and go home is one of the happiest moments of my life. I’m excited to resume spending time with my family, friends, and loved ones free from the burden of dialysis.”

The pig kidney Slayman received was meticulously modified by the Cambridge-based pharmaceutical company eGenesis. The modifications involved the removal of harmful pig genes and the addition of certain human genes to enhance compatibility with humans.

This groundbreaking procedure was made possible through collaboration between MGH and eGenesis, with the support of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA granted a compassionate use protocol, allowing access to experimental treatment for patients with life-threatening illnesses.

The success of Slayman’s transplant offers hope to thousands of individuals awaiting organ transplants worldwide. It particularly addresses the organ shortage crisis, which disproportionately affects ethnic minority communities.

Dr. Winfred Williams, Slayman’s doctor at MGH, emphasized the potential of this breakthrough to achieve health equity and provide life-saving solutions to patients in need.
