In a seismic event of significant magnitude, Taiwan was shaken by its strongest earthquake in a quarter of a century, causing widespread damage and claiming the lives of at least four individuals.

The tremor, reminiscent of the devastating quake of 1999, struck during the morning rush hour, leaving a trail of destruction across the Taiwan island.

According to Taiwan’s national fire agency, the earthquake, with a magnitude recorded at 7.2 by local authorities and 7.4 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), hit just before 8 a.m. local time. The epicenter was located approximately 18 kilometers south-southwest of Hualien, with a depth of about 35 kilometers.

The event unleashed chaos, resulting in the collapse of at least 26 buildings, with more than half of them in Hualien.

Tragically, the unwelcome natural occurrence claimed the lives of four individuals in Hualien County, while leaving at least 57 others injured.

The impact of the tremor was felt far beyond its epicenter, with traffic brought to a standstill along the east coast due to landslides and falling debris. Highways and tunnels in the mountainous regions bore the brunt of the quake’s force, causing damage to vehicles and infrastructure.

The disruption extended to public transportation, with train services suspended across the island and subway services in Taipei halted. Even a newly constructed above-ground line in Taipei suffered partial separation.

Despite the initial panic triggered by the quake, which occurred at the height of the morning rush hour, the resilience of the Taiwanese people shone through, as the island, accustomed to seismic activity, swiftly regained its composure.
