On March 5, Facebook and Instagram, faced and rebounded from a colossal outage which left millions of users stranded and unable to access their accounts.
Reports flooded in from across the globe, indicating an auto logout issue and a widespread disruption that hindered login attempts and left users perplexed and frustrated.
However, the outage was later addressed and the two social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram sprung back to normal.
According to DownDetector, a platform that monitors internet service outages, the United States alone recorded over 500,000 complaints from Facebook users and more than 70,000 from Instagram users by 10:30 a.m. ET.
The primary issues revolved around logging into the Facebook app and encountering glitches with the Instagram app.
In response to the escalating crisis, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, acknowledged the problem. Meta spokesman, Andy Stone, issued a statement on X, expressing awareness of the access difficulties and reassured users that they were actively addressing the issue.
The outage transcended geographical boundaries, affecting users from Egypt to Oklahoma, as reported by DownDetector.
Concerns about potential security breaches arose as users found themselves abruptly logged out of their accounts and unable to regain access despite entering their passwords.
NetBlocks, a global internet monitoring organization, confirmed that the outage was not linked to country-specific internet disruptions or filtering. The disruption extended beyond just social media platforms; Meta Quest’s artificial reality headsets also experienced sign-out issues, as reported by tech site 9to5Mac.

Isik Mater, the director of research at NetBlocks, described the incident as a “major outage,” highlighting the severity of the disruption. Even Meta’s official status page reflected the chaos, displaying an “Unknown” status across all services.
With Facebook boasting over 2 billion daily active users worldwide, the outage left a substantial portion of the online community in disarray. However, after several hours of frantic efforts, services were gradually restored, bringing relief to the millions affected by the disruption.
