The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a total 24-hour closure of the Third Mainland Bridge, commencing from noon on Wednesday to noon on Thursday as part of the ongoing comprehensive rehabilitation efforts on the critical infrastructure.
Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, disclosed this development in a statement to the press.
The closure, according to her, will affect both directions of the carriageways, marking a significant phase in the bridge’s repair works aimed at enhancing its structural integrity and ensuring the safety of commuters.
Mrs. Kesha said that the decision for a total shutdown is to facilitate a crucial stage of the rehabilitation project, requiring an interruption of vehicular movement on the bridge.
“This step is necessary to allow the construction team to carry out their tasks without any hindrance, ensuring the work is completed efficiently and effectively,” she explained.
The Lagos State Government, through the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, has also echoed the announcement, urging motorists and road users to plan their routes accordingly. Alternative pathways have been suggested to accommodate the expected diversion of traffic, aiming to mitigate congestion in and around the affected areas.
Both officials have called for public cooperation during this brief period, emphasizing the deployment of traffic management personnel to assist in navigating the detours and ensuring fluid movement across the city.
“We understand the inconvenience this may cause and sincerely apologize to residents, commuters, and visitors to Lagos. We are committed to minimizing disruptions and ask for everyone’s patience and understanding as we work towards the completion of this vital project,” Mr. Osiyemi stated.
