In a bid to alleviate the burden on consumers and bolster Nigeria’s economy, the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a significant reduction in the price of diesel.
The refinery, owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has slashed the price of diesel by 16.6 per cent, bringing it down to N1,000 per litre from the previous N1,200 per litre.
The move comes as a relief for many Nigerians who have been grappling with high diesel prices, exacerbated by global market dynamics and foreign exchange challenges.
Just three weeks ago, the refinery lowered the price to N1,200 per litre, marking a remarkable 30 per cent reduction from the prevailing market rate of around N1,600 per litre.
Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, emphasised the immediate impact this reduction would have on Nigeria’s inflation rate.
Speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Dangote highlighted the refinery’s efforts to sell diesel at significantly reduced prices compared to the market rates, which he hopes will contribute to lowering inflation in the country.
Dangote acknowledged the challenges posed by the recent devaluation of the naira, which had pushed diesel prices to exorbitant levels.
However, with the refinery’s intervention, he anticipates a positive shift in the inflation trajectory, providing relief to consumers and businesses alike.
The reduction in diesel prices is expected to have a ripple effect across various sectors of the economy, particularly in transportation and production, where diesel is a significant input cost.
As local production costs decrease, there is optimism for a gradual easing of inflationary pressures.
