Zenith Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, has made history with the appointment of Dr. Adaora Umeoji as its new Group Managing Director.
Effective 1 June 2024, Dr. Umeoji will take over from the current GMD, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose tenure elapse on 31 May.
The announcement which was in a statement signed by Company Secretary Michael Otu and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday, heralds an important height for Zenith Bank.
Part of the statement reads: “Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji is the first female GMDCEO since the inception of the bank, and her appointment is consistent with the bank’s executive transition tradition, succession plan, and strategy of grooming leaders from within.”
The statement highlights Dr. Umeoji’s extensive banking experience, spanning nearly 30 years, with 26 of those years dedicated to Zenith Bank.
Prior to her appointment as GMD, she served as the Bank’s Deputy Managing Director since 28 October 2016, demonstrating her dedication and leadership within the Organisation.

Dr. Umeoji’s academic credentials further solidify her qualifications for the role. She is an alumna of prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School and Columbia Business School, holding advanced degrees in business administration, law, and economics.
Furthermore, her participation in management programs at renowned universities worldwide, including MIT Sloan School of Management and Wharton Business School, speaks to her commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
In assuming her new role, Dr. Umeoji joins the ranks of female Bank Managing Directors in Nigeria, contributing to the advancement of gender diversity in the country’s banking sector.
Her appointment aligns with Zenith Bank’s executive transition tradition, succession plan, and strategy of cultivating leaders from within the organization.
