President Bola Tinubu, as the Chairman of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving judicial systems in West Africa.
President Bola Tinubu met with a delegation from the ECOWAS Judicial Council led by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria and Council Chairman, at the State House in Abuja, on Thursday.
Tinubu, also Chairman of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, emphasized the importance of integrous and accountable judicial systems in strengthening democracy across West Africa.
”We are committed to transformative democracy because we believe the judiciary can protect democracy,” the President said.
He continued, “...I assure you as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government that the judiciary is one of the pillars to protect our democracy and it is only in this regard that we can make a difference on the continent.”
Furthermore, the President commended judges from member-states for their participation in the council meeting and assured them that their recommendations would be considered.
He pledged support to ensure their expertise promotes justice in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the ECOWAS Judicial Council, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the Council’s commitment to facilitating the effective functioning of the ECOWAS judicial system.
He announced the establishment of two sub-committees to address pertinent judiciary-related issues in the region.
The first will review the Council’s rules of procedure, involving members from Benin Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone.
The second will tackle enforcement of judgments issued by the community court, comprising members from Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cabo Verde, and Togo.
Both sub-committees will present their findings to the Judicial Council, which will then pass recommendations to the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
