In a recent declaration, President Bola Tinubu reassured the nation of his commitment to addressing the persistent economic hurdles, specifically the daunting inflation rates plaguing the country.
Acknowledging the absence of instantaneous solutions, he nonetheless projected confidence in his administration’s strategies to foster economic stability and growth.
During an Iftar gathering at the Presidential Villa with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), and the Independent Campaign Council (ICC), President Tinubu admitted the challenges but remained optimistic, saying: “The economy is on the upswing. While we recognize the inflationary pressures, our proactive measures aim to mitigate them effectively.”
Amid concerns over rising inflation, which the National Bureau of Statistics reported had surged to 31.7% in February, the President emphasized his government’s focus on revenue enhancement and financial restructuring to alleviate economic strains.
Highlighting a significant stride towards empowering the youth, President Tinubu celebrated the enactment of the Student Loans Re-enactment Bill, a move poised at significantly reducing the education affordability gap and tackle poverty through enhanced access to education.
“Education is the cornerstone in the fight against poverty. With the new student loan scheme now law, we are paving a brighter future for our children, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds,” Tinubu remarked.
The legislative adjustments spearheaded by the President and his team aim to solidify the funding mechanism for the student loan initiative, with Gboyega Isiaka, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Student Loans. He also affirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring the program’s success.
Resources for the students loan funding will be sourced from one percent of all federation account revenues, ensuring a stable and sustainable financial base for the scheme.
