President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate upgrade of critical health infrastructure and equipment across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
In a statement on Thursday, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the urgent upgrade of crucial health infrastructure and equipment across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
This decision demonstrates the administration’s dedication to improving the health and social welfare sector, guaranteeing better service for all Nigerians.
Under the Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, along with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), will lead the upgrade of cancer treatment facilities and other vital developments in six key hospitals across different regions.
President Tinubu’s directive includes the establishment of oncology and nuclear medicine centres in select teaching hospitals nationwide.
These centres aim to ensure accessible, world-class cancer diagnosis and care.

The identified teaching hospitals include the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, University of Nigeria (Nsukka) Teaching Hospital, Federal Teaching Hospital in Katsina, University of Jos Teaching Hospital, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital
Additionally, ten critical healthcare service expansion projects, covering radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology, and cardiac catheterization, will be implemented in hospitals across all geo-political zones.
Notable among these are the Reference Hospital in Kaduna, Medical Diagnostic Centre Complex in Enugu, Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, University College Hospital in Ibadan, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, Federal Medical Centre in Asaba, Harmony Advanced Diagnostic Centre Complex in Ilorin, Jos University Teaching Hospital, and Federal Medical Centre in Nguru.
These initiatives, slated for completion within 12-18 months, aim to improve disease screening and diagnostics, lower mortality rates, and improve outcomes for both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Additionally, these initiatives will create many job opportunities and enhance the skills of healthcare workers across Nigeria’s six regions in advanced procedures, diagnostics, and treatments.
