Dwayne Johnson, known as The Rock, has hinted at a departure from blockbuster movies, expressing a desire to delve into more profound narratives.
The 51-year-old actor disclosed his inclination towards films that explore “struggle [and] pain” and highlighted his upcoming role as MMA fighter Mark Kerr in A24’s biopic, “The Smashing Machine.”
In an interview with Variety, Johnson emphasised his collaboration with director Benny Safdie, known for his work on “Uncut Gems,” stating, “Benny wants to create… stories that are raw and real, characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting.”
The Rock clarified that this move doesn’t mark an abandonment of blockbuster productions. He stated, “I love making them… but there’s a time and a place for them. I’m at this point in my career where I want more. And I don’t mean I want more box office. I mean I want more humanity.”

A24, the independent studio behind the project, describes it as an exploration of Kerr’s struggles with love, addiction, and his achievements in the ring.
A24’s acquisition executive, Noah Sacco, expressed excitement about the collaboration, calling The Rock and Safdie “singular talents” with an “electrifying” vision for Kerr’s story. The film is set to offer a glimpse into Kerr’s life around the turn of the millennium.
