The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, hosted an Iftar dinner on Easter Monday, bringing together Muslim senators amidst the Christian Lenten season.
The event, which symbolized a significant step towards religious harmony, saw the participation of Christian senators as well, highlighting the message of unity in diversity.
Senator Akpabio, in a statement released by his media office, emphasized the importance of not letting religious differences divide the nation.
He pointed out the unique coincidence of the Christian Lent and Muslim Ramadan periods overlapping this year, suggesting it serves a higher purpose in promoting unity among Nigerians of different faiths.
Akpabio remarked, “I want to congratulate all of us for breaking fast today and thank Almighty Allah for keeping us alive to see this day. Let’s pray that He will continue to protect us, look after our health, and our families through this Ramadan period.”
He also extended his congratulations to his colleagues and the nation for the Easter celebrations, underscoring the shared spiritual journey of both Muslims and Christians during this period.
Highlighting the divine message behind the coinciding fasting periods, Akpabio stated, “It is not a coincidence that God is merging the fasting of Muslims and Christians together.
“This occurrence, happening for about the second or third time, shows that despite our different religions, we worship one Supreme God who cares for all of us.”

The Senate President made these remarks in a spirit of inclusivity, inviting those senators who had not yet left for the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, particularly for the last ten days of Ramadan, to join in breaking the fast together.
This gesture was not only a call for religious unity but also a demonstration of the mutual respect and understanding that can exist among leaders of different faiths.
Akpabio’s initiative is seen as a beacon of hope for fostering national unity and religious tolerance in Nigeria, setting an example for both political leaders and all citizens to look beyond religious differences and work together for the common good of the nation.
