The police has detained a father and his son for impersonation during the current Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
This news information was released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) recently.
The 2024 examinations were generally well-run, according to JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, who made this revelation on Wednesday while on an inspection tour of the UTME centres in Kaduna.
The exception was a few cases of impersonation, which were made possible by the fact that some people now have multiple National Identity Numbers (NINs).
Prof. Oloyede issued a warning, claiming that JAMB has upgraded its technology to detect any kind of exam cheating and that those who cheat will be arrested either immediately after the exam or much later.
“For those who engage in cheating, they should know that it does not pay. Technology is assisting us in verifying that,” the JAMB Registrar told reporters shortly after the inspection at the Kaduna State University (KASU) CBT Center.
“The majority of the issues we have nationwide are related to impersonation. The goal of identity verification has been undermined, for example, when we claim to have a NIN and there are situations of persons having two NINs. We will bring up the fact that some persons have two NINs with NIMC.
“In a case where a father is writing exams for his son while posing as the son, I wonder whether you aren’t ruining your son’s future. Naturally, two of them are in detention right now. When they are both imprisoned in the same cell, I don’t know what the father will tell his kid. This did not occur in Kaduna, but I will withhold the state’s identity,” the Registrar stated.
