Polish authorities have arrested a national suspected of collaborating with Russian military intelligence in a planned assassination attempt on Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The suspected killer, identified as Pawel K, was reportedly prepared to engage in espionage activities to aid in the plot.
Prosecutors in Poland, on Thursday, disclosed that Pawel K was instrumental in providing intelligence to Russian forces and had established connections with Russian citizens directly involved in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The information he allegedly gathered was pivotal in planning a potential assassination of President Zelenskyy.
The revelations about this plot were bolstered by vital intelligence shared by Ukrainian prosecutors, which enabled Polish authorities to accumulate “essential evidence” against Pawel K. According to the statement from Polish prosecutors, if convicted, Pawel K could face up to eight years in prison.
Further detailing the suspected plan, Ukraine’s Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin noted that Pawel K had been tasked with collecting information about the security measures at Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport in southeastern Poland.
The airport has been a critical hub under the control of United States troops and is frequently used by President Zelenskyy during his international travels. It also serves as a key transit point for foreign officials and aid convoys en route to Ukraine.
Prosecutor-General Kostin emphasized the broader implications of the incident, highlighting it on X (formerly known as Twitter) as evidence of Russia’s ongoing threat not only to Ukraine but to global security.
“The Kremlin’s criminal regime… organizes and carries out sabotage operations on the territory of other sovereign states,” Kostin stated.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski praised the effectiveness of Poland’s special services and the judicial system in thwarting the plot, while acknowledging the crucial cooperation with Ukraine in the process.
The cooperation to foil the suspected plan during a period when diplomatic relations between Poland and Ukraine have seen tensions, particularly over issues related to agricultural imports, despite Warsaw’s robust support for Kyiv since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
The arrest underscores the heightened vigilance and security challenges faced by nations involved in the Ukraine conflict, particularly in safeguarding prominent leaders and strategic locations from hostile operations directed by foreign intelligence.
