Sacramento, CA – California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) raised alarm this week, suggesting that former President Donald Trump may be seriously considering a run for a third term in office — something explicitly prohibited by the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Speaking at a summit hosted by Politico in Sacramento, Newsom argued that Trump’s actions and rhetoric show a disregard for democratic norms.
“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” Newsom said. “This guy doesn’t believe in free, fair elections.”
The governor, who is himself widely speculated to be preparing for a presidential run in 2028, pointed to Trump’s recent behavior as evidence of his intentions. He noted that Trump has been frequently seen promoting “Trump 2028” hats and is reportedly planning to construct a massive new ballroom at the White House.
“You think he’s joking about 2028?” Newsom asked the audience. “Who spends $200 million on a ballroom at their home and then leaves the house?”
While Trump has not formally announced any plans for a third presidential bid, his hints have sparked speculation and debate. Any attempt to seek a third term would face immediate legal and constitutional hurdles under the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms in office.
Newsom’s remarks come as both parties look ahead to 2028, with Democrats weighing their potential frontrunners and Republicans navigating Trump’s continued dominance over their base.
