As anticipation builds for the recommendation of new minimum wage by the Tripartite Committee of the National Minimum Wage, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has boldly made a wage proposition of N350,000.

This proposal comes against the backdrop of economic challenges spurred by the removal of fuel subsidies and soaring inflation rates, indicating the need for a wage that adequately addresses the prevailing hardships faced by Nigerian workers.

Speaking at NAAT’s National Delegate Conference in Abuja, NAAT President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, underscored the distinction between minimum wage and living wage, while advocating for a wage structure that reflects the rising cost of living and affords workers’ dignity.

Comparing Nigeria’s wage standards to those of other African countries, Nwokoma highlighted the glaring disparity and urged for a substantial increase to enhance workers’ welfare and standard of living.

Nwokoma also addressed persistent challenges faced by NAAT, which include delays in circulars related to salary progression and the unresolved FGN/NAAT 2009 Agreement.

Furthermore, NAAT expressed concerns over the dilapidated state of roads nationwide, emphasizing the need for urgent interventions to address infrastructure deficits that impede economic activities and jeopardize safety.

Despite these hurdles, NAAT remains committed to advocating for its members’ rights and welfare, pledging to intensify efforts in collaboration with sister unions to address these issues.
