Workers of Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN), on Tuesday, demonstrated against the ban on sachet alcoholic drink at the office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Lagos.
The protest was the most recent in many of the demonstrations since February 1, 2024, when NAFDAC started the implementation of the ban on sachet alcoholic beverages and glass bottles of 200ml and below.
The members of the association, chanting ‘Adeyeye Save Our Job’, were also seen with placards, inscribed with ‘Let poor Nigerians breathe’, and ‘Let beverage workers breathe’, amongst others.
NAFDAC director-general, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, had earlier said that no such beverages were registered with the regulatory body.
Recall that, on February 13, 2024, NAFDAC was given a 14-day ultimatum by members of the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, to lift the ban on sachet alcoholic drink.
The association, an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), issued the ultimatum during a protest at the NAFDAC headquarters in Abuja.
As a measure of intensifying their struggle, Association members have been warned to step up protests in all Agency offices around the country if the restriction was not lifted by NAFDAC.
