The Lagos Tarkwa Bay Area residents where over the past week force to evacuate the areas Over alleged oil vandalism. Report says the action was unlawful taken by the Military and other agencies and have rendered thousands of people homeless and stranded.
The Nigeria Civil Society have moved against the government asking for justification over the action of eviction, arguing that if any resident after investigation is found to be involved or engaged in the criminal activity of vandalizing Government oil pipeline should be arrested and prosecuted according to law. They have so far submitted their petitions to the Lagos State Govt.
The Army has said that the area was filled with hand dug oil wells and other tools used in vandalizing pipelines.
The civil society groups blamed the security agencies over irresponsible manner of handling the issue, says the area is a heavily militarized zone and if there was any illegal activity it was their duty to arrest offenders and punished them according to the law. Their petition are on the grounds that no law In Nigeria allows summary eviction as a form of collective punishment in a community over a general alleged crime.
The residents have raised their voices in protest asking the State to intervene as they have rendered homeless with children and supposedly future leaders.
