The popular American R&B sensation, Usher, has opened up about how he enjoys Burna Boy even as a Nigerian artist
The Grammy-winning artist recently disclosed that his collaboration with Nigerian stars, such as Burna Boy and Pheelz, was specifically to mark his embrace of the global Afrobeats phenomenon.
“I am all about collaboration and bringing African, you know, Nigerian culture to my own world,” Usher expressed his mind during an interview with Apple Music. “Their music is really popular now. I wanted to be part of it, that’s why I went to Africa to make this album.”
The collaboration Usher was speaking about materialized in his latest album, where Burna Boy lent his vocals to the title track “Homecoming,” while Pheelz contributed his production prowess to the lead single “Ruin.”
Reflecting on the creative process behind “Homecoming,” Usher lauded Burna Boy’s artistry, emphasizing the unique dimension he brought to the track:
“I just felt that Burna Boy would take it to a different level of credibility. I really do enjoy him as an artist,” while also remarking that “I just felt that this song would only be lifted better if he was part of it.”

That song is a song that blends R&B and Afrobeats, and creates a sound that captivates listeners from the first note to the final verse.
Produced by Pheelz, “Ruin” is a detailed narrative of closure to a failed relationship for the lead artiste, Usher. In the lyrics, the both artistes present diverse perspectives on heartbreak and the journey of moving on.
According to the song, despite the heartbreak he (Usher) experiences, he boldly embraces his newfound single life and expresses his sentiments in the chorus with lines like, “Bye-bye, good riddance for the last time… You ruined me for everybody.”
Pheelz, in the second verse, offers a glimpse into his own emotional journey and states: “I be learnin’ tricks where you put the money / ‘Cause back then I was very lonely / I still am, I’m just tryna find peace every day / My heart is on holiday.”
“Ruin” doesn’t come as a standalone – it is one of the tracks on Usher’s forthcoming album, and is accompanied by five remixes and an instrumental version. This release follows Usher’s earlier shared tracks which include “Good Good” featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage, “Risk It All” featuring H.E.R., and “Standing Next to You (Remix)” with Jung Kook.
