The just-concluded Grammy award however did not end well for Nigerian Nominees as Legendary Singer/Songwriter Angelique Kidjo defeats Wizkid, Femi Kuti to win the Grammy Award category
Angelique a four-time Grammy award winner did well to recognize Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Mr. Eazi respectively for their collaboration on the album which also means a win for all of them.
She has been named 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2021, and her latest Album mother nature-centered on issues affecting the world while sending a message of hope to humanity.
Angelique had earlier mentioned in an interview in the week leading to the Grammy that she is carrying great responsibility as a Grammy winner every year.
According to Kidjo “the Grammys remind me of the great responsibility and I am working hard to pass on the torch”.
Nigerian Music lovers and fans of Wizkid Made in Lagos which was nominated in the same category, and failed to pick the award are not happy at all at the Grammys.
Wizkid didn’t get the Grammy award he wanted with the acclaimed Made in Lagos album, but his Nigerian fanbase can be glad that the eventual winner of the Global Music Album category, Angelique Kidjo, did so with help from at least two Nigerian acts.
The Legendary Kidjo made a return to the Grammy after she had previously won up to four Grammy awards and walked away with another gold plaque.
The Singer and songwriter featured Yemi Alade and eclectic Mr. Eazi on the tracks Dignity and Africa, One of a kind respectively. She also had Burna Boy on the album.
She gave a shout-out to the trio, acknowledging their parts in the success of another massive landmark in her four decades on stage.
At 61 and after her 16th Album, Kidjo doesn’t look like she will be slowing down as an Artist or Activist lending her voice to the situation of women and other social issues on the continent.
The nomination and winners of the category for best Album are determined by the academy based on considerations for Performance, Production, and Engineering.
