Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has mandated an urgent reassessment of waste management policies and operations, focusing on Akure, the state capital.
The directive was issued during a meeting between the Governor and the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Sunday Akinwalire, at the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka, Akure.
Expressing dissatisfaction with Akure’s cleanliness, Aiyedatiwa, in a statement by the Ministry of Environment’s Press Officer, Itunu Lijofi, stressed the need to restore Akure to its previous status as one of Nigeria’s cleanest state capitals.
The governor underscored his administration’s dedication to ensuring cleanliness across every corner of the state, with a particular focus on the capital.
In response to the directive, Commissioner Akinwalire conducted an inspection/monitoring exercise on Tuesday, covering strategic areas and various dumpsites within Akure, the state capital.

The commissioner, accompanied by Ministry of Environment Directors, Waste Management Authority officials, State Task Force members, and security agencies, conducted an inspection visit.
Prior to the inspection, the commissioner convened a meeting with stakeholders in the state’s waste management to strategize the implementation of the Governor’s directive through the #KeepOndoClean initiative launch.
Mr Akinwalire urged the public to prioritize cleanliness and a healthy lifestyle, assuring government efforts to enhance the environment’s people-friendliness.
Issuing a stern warning, the commissioner urged against trading on walkways and illegal refuse dumping on major roads, emphasizing compliance with environmental laws and the establishment of a disciplinary court for offenders.
