By Shalom Kasim
This executive order, rooted in the constitutional powers vested in Governor Yahaya, reflects the state’s commitment to achieving sustainable water supply and improved sanitation facilities. The comprehensive framework outlined in the order is poised to revolutionize water access in both urban and rural areas.
Governor Yahaya, highlighting the pressing need for improved water access, emphasized Gombe State’s dedication to promoting healthy living and sustainable economic growth. The STWSSA is mandated to oversee critical aspects related to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities in small towns, including planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining these essential facilities.
Community participation is at the forefront of this initiative, with Governor Yahaya stressing the importance of ownership gradually transitioning to benefiting communities through Water Consumer Associations (WCA). This approach aims to encourage sustainability and local engagement.
Additionally, the Executive Order elevates Local Government Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Units to full-fledged departments within their respective Local Government Councils. These departments will play a pivotal role in project planning, supporting community-based committees, providing technical assistance, and facilitating improved water supply and sanitation services at the local level.
The immediate effect of the Executive Order is underscored by Governor Yahaya, with provisions allowing for future revisions or modifications to align with evolving needs and circumstances. The composition of the Board for the Agency will be announced after consultations with relevant stakeholders, further emphasizing a collaborative approach to this transformative endeavor.
