German police have apprehended 11 Nigerians suspected of involvement in a sophisticated dating scam orchestrated by a Nigerian mafia group known as the Black Axe gang.

The arrests, following nationwide raids on Tuesday, mark a significant blow to the criminal syndicate’s operations in Germany.

The extent of the scam’s impact became apparent as police reported 450 cases of romance scamming in Bavaria alone in 2023. This resulted in damages totaling 5.3 million euros ($5.7 million).

The arrests targeted individuals holding Nigerian citizenships. They are aged between 29 and 53 and were operating from various locations, including homes and asylum shelters.
