In their boxing bout on Saturday night, Tyson Fury prevailed in a contentious decision against Francis Ngannou, despite the MMA star’s knockout in Saudi Arabia.
Unbeaten in his professional career coming into Riyadh, Fury faced off against former UFC champion Ngannou in his boxing debut. In the bout, which lasted the full ten scheduled rounds and saw Ngannou, 37, maybe do enough to defeat the boxer, Fury, 35, did not defend his WBC heavyweight title.
In Round 3, the Cameroonian stunned the audience and the combat sports community at large by down the Briton with a left hook. For the majority of the fight, Ngannou outboxed Fury; yet, when the scorecards were announced, Ngannou was not declared the winner.
Following a close contest, Fury was declared the winner by split decision. He then squared up against Oleksandr Usyk, the unified heavyweight boxing champion, who would likely be Fury’s next opponent, also in Saudi Arabia.
