The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, stated during the Ministerial Press Briefing at Radio House, Abuja, that there are also plans to expand and upgrade 17,000 primary health care centers over the next few years.
Pate explained that the expansion will involve renovating these centers, equipping them, and making them fully operational to provide essential services such as immunization, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health services, treatment of non-communicable diseases, and facilitating referrals to secondary facilities.

The Minister emphasised that this ambitious plan requires the states to support the federal government’s efforts.
He said, “We are also committed to retaining 120,000 frontline health workers. Currently, 1,400 primary health care centers are equipped to provide skilled birth attendance, funded through the NPHCDA and NHIA, covering the 8,300 facilities.”
The minister noted that contraception is intended to allow women to control their reproduction, choose when and how to manage their bodies, and access quality reproductive health services.
Additionally, the minister mentioned that the ministry has collaborated with the Kano state government and security agencies to shut down open markets where drugs are sold without regulation.
