The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its commitment to fighting corruption and economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
During a visit to the Emir’s palace on Tuesday, the Ilorin Zonal Director of the EFCC, Harry Erin, and his management team received the commendation.
Similarly, the Emir emphasized the role of the EFCC in nation-building and urged all patriotic Nigerians to support the Commission’s efforts to restore the country’s international reputation.
Also, he expressed concern over the extensive nature of corruption in Nigeria, highlighting the ease with which even illiterates engage in high economic crimes.
“The rate at which corruption has permeated the Nigeria system is alarming. People don’t need to go to school to be taught how to commit economic and financial crimes.
“Yet, you find Nigerians especially the young ones getting involved in technically high crimes. It is bad to the extent that rich people in Nigeria today are often seen to be corrupt.
“This is not good for our image. We owe our nation the sacred duty of making this country free of corruption and crimes,” he stated.
Acknowledging the challenges in the anti-corruption fight, the Emir encouraged the EFCC to persist in its efforts to minimize corruption, if not eradicate it entirely.
However, he expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Ilorin Zonal Command under Erin’s leadership, describing him as “eminently qualified for the job.”

Additionally, Erin expressed gratitude for the Emir’s support and the backing of the traditional institution in the state over the past six years.
He described his visit as a “homecoming” and sought continued support from the Ilorin Emirate to spread the anti-corruption message to the grassroots.
Furthermore, Erin highlighted the achievements of the Ilorin Zonal Command in addressing crimes such as money laundering, embezzlement, illegal mining, and cybercrime, noting that many criminals are now leaving Kwara State due to the EFCC’s effective enforcement.
He said, “Your Highness, we are here today to appreciate you for the support the Commission has received from you in the discharge of our responsibilities.
“We like to further seek the support of the Ilorin Emirate in ensuring that the anti-corruption message is relayed down to the grassroots.
“A corruption-free society will foster peace, unity, and security for all citizens.”
Meanwhile, the Zonal Director urged the Emir and his subjects to report any fraudulent activities to the EFCC for investigation, emphasizing the significant role of traditional leaders in the anti-corruption campaign.
