The Nigerian Navy has so far handed over eight suspects to the EFCC in the ongoing intensive investigation into oil theft claim.
In a significant development on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) initiated a comprehensive investigation into the alleged involvement of eight individuals in oil theft within the confines of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The inquiry stems from the recent handover of these suspects to the EFCC by the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Akiama Road, Bonny Island, Port Harcourt.
The handover ceremony marks the culmination of a series of events triggered by the apprehension of a vessel named MV Cabrini and its eight crew members during a coordinated operation on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
According to the Nigerian Navy, the suspects – Tyson Saidi, Emmanuel Memedo, Bamidele Owoeye, Sunday Okenwa, Sanusi Adeola, Kessen Friday, Miebaka Kienka, and Emmanuel Adewole – were apprehended with an undisclosed quantity of illegally acquired Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) along the strategic Bonny Channel.

Providing insights into the operation, Naval Hand-Over Officer, Lieutenant Commander G.Y Gwaza, highlighted that the handover of the suspected oil thieves was executed to facilitate further investigation and possible prosecution by the EFCC. This collaborative effort between the Navy and EFCC underscores the commitment to combatting economic crimes in the region.
Upon receiving the suspects, Chief Superintendent of the EFCC, CSE Itoro Levi, expressed gratitude for the Navy’s cooperation and pledged a thorough and professional investigation into the matter.
