Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has set a mark for the resolution of Nigeria’s foreign exchange challenges by setting up an oil palm development program.
In a recent engagement with Otunba Francis Meshioye, the National President of the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN), and his team at the Government House in Benin City, Obaseki emphasized the crucial role of highlighting fiscal policies to support local manufacturers.
In his statement, the governor said that reliance on imported goods and services over the past four decades has put significant strain on the country’s foreign exchange reserves. He then pointed out the necessity for Nigeria to shift its focus towards self-sufficiency in manufacturing.
“It’s imperative for us to start consuming what we manufacture. The continuous dependency on imports is not sustainable, given our current foreign exchange predicament,” Obaseki stated, highlighting the potential of manufacturing to invigorate the economy.
Edo State, according to the governor, is positioning itself as a leader in the manufacturing and production sectors by capitalizing on its abundant raw materials. The state’s ambitious oil palm development program, the largest in Africa, stands as a testament to this commitment.
Through the Edo State Oil Palm Program (ESOPP), the government has allocated 70,000 hectares of land to seven investors for oil palm cultivation, setting the stage for a significant boost in local production and exports.
This initiative not only aims to make Edo State a hub for oil palm production, but also sets a blueprint for how Nigerian states can leverage their unique resources for economic development. Obaseki’s administration is betting big on manufacturing to drive growth and create jobs, marking a decisive step away from the country’s over-reliance on oil exports.
