MADRID, Spain — Nigerian footballer Christantus Uche has undergone successful surgery on a serious knee injury suffered during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against AS Monaco, with the Spanish club now supporting the midfielder through what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation process.

The 23-year-old was injured on 6 August during Getafe’s 1–0 defeat to Monaco after a heavy challenge left him unable to continue. He was taken from the pitch on a stretcher, initially raising concerns about the severity of the injury. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed significant damage to his right knee.

Uche subsequently underwent surgery in Lyon, France, with the procedure completed without complications. According to reports, the operation was conducted under the supervision of Dr Christofer Oyola, head of Getafe’s medical department, and Álvaro García Zudaire, the club’s head of physiotherapy.

Getafe promise full support. Following the operation, Getafe expressed its support for the Nigerian international and confirmed that he has now entered the rehabilitation phase.

The club said its medical and technical teams would provide Uche with the necessary resources and guidance throughout his recovery, while wishing him the strongest possible progress.

The injury represents a major setback for Uche at a time when he was looking to establish himself further after an important spell in English football.

From Getafe to the Premier League

Uche joined Getafe from AD Ceuta in 2024 and quickly became an important member of the Spanish side. Getafe records show that he made 41 appearances and scored five goals during his time with the club before moving to Crystal Palace on loan.

In September 2025, Crystal Palace signed Uche on a season-long loan from Getafe. The Nigerian made appearances for the Premier League club and also featured in European competition during the 2025–26 campaign.

He returned to Getafe in the summer of 2026, where he was expected to play an important role in the club’s new campaign.

A difficult moment for Nigeria’s rising talent

The injury is also a setback for a player who had begun attracting increasing attention in Nigerian football.

Uche has represented Nigeria at senior international level and was regarded as one of the country’s emerging talents following his rapid progression from Spanish lower-league football to La Liga and then the Premier League.

Now, his immediate priority is recovery.

While the exact length of his rehabilitation has not been officially specified by Getafe, Spanish reports indicate that the injury is serious and could keep him out for a significant portion of the season.

For Uche, the coming months will be about patience, rehabilitation and rebuilding his fitness.

For Getafe and Nigerian football supporters, the hope is that the young midfielder can make a full recovery and return to the pitch stronger.
