Tensions are running high at the Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Umuahala-Obuzor Asa, Ukwa West council area of Abia State, following the tragic death of a female crane operator, Ocheze Ogbonna.
The incident, which has stirred anger and grief within the community in Abia, allegedly involves a Chinese manager of the company.
Reports suggest that Ocheze Ogbonna, a native of the company’s host community, was pushed from a crane by the Chinese manager, resulting in fatal injuries. Witnesses claim that Ocheze’s rejection of alleged romantic advances from the manager might have triggered the incident.
The news of Ocheze’s death has led to a wave of protests, with youths from the community barricading the gates of the steel company, demanding justice for the deceased. However, the protests were met with resistance as soldiers guarding the premises reportedly dispersed the demonstrators, allegedly resorting to violence.
Speaking to our correspondents, one of the protesting youths expressed grievances, accusing the Chinese management of mistreatment and calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. The alleged involvement of security forces in suppressing the protests has further fueled resentment among the community members.
Amidst the outcry, calls for justice have echoed from various quarters. Hon Chris Nkwonta, the Member representing Ukwa West and Ukwa East federal constituency, condemned the incident, describing it as a blatant disregard for human life and an affront to the host community.
Nkwonta urged relevant authorities to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice, emphasizing the need to hold Chinese expatriates operating in Nigeria accountable for their actions.
