In a strategic move to combat food shortages and provide sustainable livelihoods, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has unveiled plans to reactivate the South Chad Irrigation Scheme.
The announcement was made during the governor’s visit to Wulgo, a community in Ngala Local Government Area, on Monday.
Governor Zulum emphasized the state’s commitment to expanding irrigation activities along the shores of Lake Chad, with a focus on resettling communities and rejuvenating the South Chad Irrigation Scheme.
The initiative aims to create employment opportunities and enhance food security for the people in the region, particularly those in Gamboru, Dambore, Wulgo, Marte, and Kirenuwa.
Addressing the media, Governor Zulum stated, “The State Ministry of Agriculture has devised a comprehensive strategy for reactivating irrigation schemes across Borno State. This proactive approach is crucial in providing resettled communities with sustainable livelihoods, reducing dependency on food aid.”
During the governor’s visit to key sites such as Gamboru, Wulgo, and Dambore irrigation sites, he was accompanied by prominent figures, including Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Representative Engr Bukar Talba, Assembly Member Hon Bukar Abatcha, and Ngala Local Government Chairman.

The delegation inspected the existing infrastructure and discussed the potential impact of reactivating the irrigation scheme on the local communities.
Governor Zulum highlighted the urgency of finding long-term solutions to the prevailing food crises when he said, “The current distribution of food aid is not sustainable. The State Ministry of Agriculture has made significant decisions, including the reactivation of irrigation schemes, to address the root causes of food shortages in Borno State.”
