The cause of the detention was allegedly related to the actor’s failure to declare a luxury watch he intended to auction for charity, prompting an investigation into potential tax evasion within the European Union (EU).

EU regulations stipulate that individuals arriving with “cash or certain valuable items” exceeding €10,000 (£8,580) must declare them. However, a source disclosed to CBS News that Schwarzenegger was not initially asked to fill out the required declaration form.

The 76-year-old actor, known for his roles in iconic movies like Terminator, etc., faced a series of challenges during the ordeal. Although he eventually managed to pay the tax, complications arose when the initial card machine failed.

Subsequent issues included the discovery of a closed bank nearby and ATM withdrawal limits being too low. Customs officials had to bring in a new card machine for the transaction to proceed.

Despite the setbacks, Schwarzenegger’s spokesperson characterized the airport incident as “a total comedy full of errors” that could potentially make for an amusing police film. German tabloid Bild reported that the actor remained calm throughout the situation, even posing for a photo with a smile, holding a box containing the watch, accompanied by a note that read “For Austria.

The luxury watch in question was reportedly custom-made for Arnold Schwarzenegger by renowned watchmaker Audemars Piguet. Such timepieces are known to command high values, sometimes reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The watch was slated to be auctioned at a fundraising dinner for The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative in Kitzbuhel, Austria, approximately 89 km (55 miles) from Munich, later on Thursday.

The auction event, scheduled at the esteemed Stanglwirt hotel, promised a collection of “artworks, signed exhibits, and experiences from the worlds of sports and film” for sale. The auction listing for Schwarzenegger’s watch, as obtained by Bild, revealed that it was one of only 20 in existence and featured “an image of Arnold in his iconic pose with the words ‘Arnold Classic.”

The starting price for bids was listed at €50,000.
