In an effort to combat Banditry, Kidnapping, cultism, Arm robbery and other security challenges in the south west region, the South West Governors have create an agency AMOTEKUN to tackle security issues in the region.
According to report the creation of the Amotekun is to complement the police in the fight against insecurity in all the areas of the south west States.
Almost like a security company that will cover most of the areas that the security agencies of government is not present. To strengthen and represent security agencies of Government charge with a mandate to collect security intelligent information and pass to the appropriate law enforcement agencies of Government.
The creation of Amotekun is not to serve as a security outfit but a Programme that is design to help the police and other law enforcement agencies and state command to gather information more effectively.
That the program is conceived as a result of security challenges and to more-so give security reassurance that the leaders are tackling security issues in the region to enable safety of movement and business which will in turn boost the economy of the region. If there is no security there is no growth.
Thé Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi who is also the chairman of the South West Governor’s Forum explain the purpose of the program.
That Amotekun is a confident security strategy for the south west states and not a regional state police Corp. Saying that the program is not born to generate fear among the people, but to bring confidence of free environmental movement within the region
Thé Ekiti state governor reassured the people of the region to note; that security concern of the state government and the action taken to institutionalize a measure of running crime out of the region is to prove that those elected into offices are looking after the needs of the people.
Some stakeholders of the Yoruba leaders expressed acknowledgement of the program saying it is a long overdue plan
