Among the African countries that fell into the rampage orchestrated across some parts of Africa by military officers, the Republic of Niger was not exempted as its government, too, got toppled by the junta led by Abdourahamane Tchiani in July, 2023.

Following the military coup that saw to the displacement of the president on July 26 of this same year, President Mohamed Bazoum has since been under illegitimate arrest with his wife, Haziza, and their son, Salem.

While passing judgement on the wrong defendant’s move against president Mohamed Bazoum, the judge has now commanded the deposed president’s unconditional release after the latter’s appeal attempts since September, 2023.
“The defendant has violated their right not to be arbitrarily detained”, the judge declared.
