Speaking to reporters, Trump emphasized his determination to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine, signaling that he is willing to hold direct talks with Putin in the near term. However, he also issued a warning that further economic sanctions could be imposed if Moscow continues to sidestep dialogue with Kyiv.
“I’m focused on ending this war and bringing stability,” Trump said. “I’m ready to meet with President Putin, but he has to understand — continued avoidance of talks with President Zelensky will have consequences.”
The comments came just hours after a senior Kremlin aide suggested that a Trump-Putin meeting could take place “in the coming days,” raising speculation about a potential breakthrough in the stalemated conflict.
Relations between Moscow and Kyiv remain deeply strained after more than three years of fighting, with previous international mediation efforts yielding limited progress. Western allies, including NATO members, have maintained that any lasting peace must include direct engagement between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump’s stance marks a shift from the Biden-era diplomatic strategy, which largely conditioned high-level talks with Moscow on Russia’s willingness to engage directly with Ukraine’s leadership. His approach appears aimed at opening a separate channel with Putin while keeping pressure on the Kremlin through economic measures.
The Kremlin has not yet confirmed the timing or location of any summit, but officials in Washington say backchannel discussions are ongoing.
