The Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, presented the 2024 Custom Service budget to the Nigeria Senate Committee on Customs at the National Assembly yesterday.
In his defence of the 2024 budget which totals N706.43b, the Customs CG underscored the importance of bolstering officers’ welfare, advancing ongoing projects, and harnessing technology to streamline Customs operations.
Emphasising the need to enhance officers’ welfare, CG Adeniyi promised various incentives, such as awards, promotions, and increased allowances, to boost their performance and well-being.
Furthermore, in a post shared on the custom X handle, it was stated that the CG pledged to surpass the 2024 revenue target of N5.079 trillion, which represents a 27.75 percent increase from the previous year. He outlined several strategies to achieve this, including the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and measures to standardise procedures, improve port efficiency, and intensify anti-smuggling efforts.

Addressing concerns about revenue shortfalls which were attributed to factors such as concessions in the Common External Tariff and financial constraints in 2023, CG Bashir expressed optimism for improved performance in 2024.
Senator Isa Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, commended CG Adeniyi for his accomplishments and assured the Senate’s support in addressing issues related to remuneration and infrastructure to help meet the 2024 revenue target.
